2005 Apple Crop Estimates
Attached is the latest apple crop estimate for Canada and the U.S. Overall, the Canadian crop is estimated at 23.3 million bushels, down 6.7% from 2004. The U.S. crop is estimated at 223.3 million bushels, down 10% from 2004 and down 2% from the five-year average.
The 2004 Ontario crop was estimated at 8.4 million bushels. Based on surveys conducted with growers, packers and processors, this was adjusted upwards to 9.8 million bushels. The 2005 Ontario crop estimate conducted in September indicated 9.6 million bushel estimate, down 1.8% from 2004. The OAG does not agree with this estimate and expects the final estimate to significantly exceed the 2004 crop. Indicators considered include:
| |
Juice apple volume will far exceed last year’s numbers. Ontario processors
alone will receive in excess of 5 million bushels of orchard juice with packing line
juice apples yet to come. |
| |
Processing into non-juice products will be at least the same as last year. |
| |
Shipments of juice apples into Quebec and the U.S. will far exceed last year’s
volume. |
| |
Fresh market sales have been higher than last year’s volume for September and
October. |
| |
November 1st storage holdings far exceed last year’s holdings. |
Given these indicators, the 2005 crop far exceeded last year’s volumes.

2005 CAIS Interim Payments Available
2005 CAIS Interim Payment Applications are now available to Ontario CAIS participants who wish to receive 2005 program year assistance early. Normally, program participants cannot receive full CAIS payments until the program year is complete. However, by using the Interim Payment Application, producers can receive a portion of these payments early. To be eligible for an interim payment you must have selected coverage for the 2005 program year by May 31, 2005 -OR- have submitted a completed "New Participant Application" for new 2005 CAIS participants by May 31, 2005, have completed a minimum of six consecutive months of farming activity, have completed production cycle, and be farming in Canada and reporting farming income to Canada Revenue Agency. To apply, CAIS participants must submit the completed 2005 CAIS Interim Payment Application to Agricorp by December 31, 2005. Participants who receive an interim payment are required to submit 2005 CAIS forms by June 30, 2006 and must comply with all program requirements. Failure to do so will
result in an overpayment. Because an interim payment is based on an estimate of income, producers may receive more or less money than they are entitled to. If the interim payment is more than the full CAIS benefit, producers are required to repay the difference. If it is less, producers will receive the difference once their final information is processed.
